UNESCO declared 23rd April to be WORLD BOOK DAY (and World Copyright Day) in 1995, celebrating birth and death dates of William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega among others. In Spain it’s a huge celebration with hundreds of authors meeting readers and signing their books, discounts in bookshops, among many events about books and reading. It is particularly grand in Catalonia, as Sant Jordi –St.George– is the patron saint, and it is customary to give books and roses as presents to one’s family, partners and friends. Happy World Book Day to you all!
